The concept of placing cucumber slices over the eyes during a spa facial isn’t just for the aesthetics, but also for practical reasons: The natural coolness of the cucumber depuffs the under-eye area, the water adds hydration and the vitamin C aids with brightening. But you don’t need to reach for a vegetable to fake a better night’s sleep. The best under-eye patches, which work by enhancing your skin’s absorption of their active ingredients, accomplish many of the same goals and stay in place while you go about your day.

I tested over a dozen under-eye patches to find out which ones do the best job at depuffing, hydrating and firming. The Loops Weekly Reset Rejuvenating Hydrogel Eye Mask won best overall for its retinol-enhanced skin benefits and exquisite texture. And the sun ray–shaped Live Tinted Rays Copper Peptide Eye Masks offer the greatest value of the bunch. To bolster my reporting, I also reached out to dermatologists about the best practices for wearing under-eye patches and what ingredients to look out for. All the winners from my testing are listed below, and you can scroll even further down to read up on the masks that didn’t make the cut. Best Under-Eye Patches Overall

A Retinol-Infused Option That Targets Multiple Skin Concerns

MOST POPULAR

Loops Weekly Reset Rejuvenating Hydrogel Eye Mask

Material: Hydrogel | Key ingredients: Niacinamide, retinol, pearl extract, glycerin, geranium flower | Fragrance: None | Price per pair: $5

Best for:

  • Most skin types
  • Potent ingredients like retinol and niacinamide
  • Travel-friendly packaging

Skip if:

  • You’re sensitive to retinol
  • You prefer a daytime mask, since retinol breaks down when exposed to sun
  • You’re on a budget

These innovative hydrogel masks were my favorite of the entire bunch I tested by far. Infused with potent brighteners like niacinamide and retinol, plus hydrating humectants like glycerin, they’re equipped to brighten, depuff and moisturize. The flexible and springy texture of these masks also made them easy to smooth under my eyes without tearing, and they had a cooling effect that was a relief after a long day peering at screens.

They’re also recommended by dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi, who finds that they’re more effective at smoothing over fine lines and uneven skin texture since they contain retinol. She cautions against using them, though, if you have especially sensitive skin. I didn’t experience any negative side effects from using these patches, just some visible brightening and depuffing for my under-eye area in a tight 10 minutes. I would definitely buy these again and think that they’re worth the cost of $5 per pair.

Material: Hydrogel | Key ingredients: Niacinamide, bakuchiol, copper peptides, squalane, banana extract | Fragrance: None | Price per pair: $4.40

Best for:

  • Those who want to try retinol alternatives
  • Brightening and smoothing
  • Travel-friendly packaging

Skip if:

  • You’re sensitive to bakuchiol
  • You prefer a mask shape that covers more surface area

These Live Tinted patches are made with a thick, pliable hydrogel material that adhered to my face nicely without drifting southward during use. The golden hue also nods to the fact that they contain copper peptides, which have been shown in studies to reduce the appearance of fine lines by increasing collagen production. Other key ingredients include antioxidant-rich banana extract, retinol-alternative bakuchiol and a host of other derm-approved ingredients that really went to work when I put these to the test.

Applied as directed for 10 minutes, the patches soothed, nourished, ever-so-slightly brightened and moisturized my under-eye area. They also felt deeply soothing after a hot shower—calming my dehydrated skin with a pleasantly cool, but not-too-icy touch. Overall, I loved the look and feel of these under-eye patches, and at $22 for a pack of five, they’re not terribly cost-prohibitive either.

Best Luxury Under-Eye Patches

Textured Masks With A Light, Floral Scent

Joanna Vargas Bright Eye Firming Mask

Material: Hydrogel | Key ingredients: Allantoin, hyaluronic acid, chamomile extract, hydrolyzed silk peptides | Fragrance: Yes | Price per pair: $12

Best for:

  • Deep hydration
  • Key ingredients like hydrolyzed silk peptides and allantoin
  • Travel-friendly packaging

Skip if:

  • You’re on a budget
  • You’re sensitive to essential oils or fragrance
  • You want a more cooling effect

In my testing, I put the beauty editor–beloved Joanna Vargas Bright Eye Firming Mask head-to-head against versions from other high-end brands, and these were by far my favorite in the category for their pleasant textured feel (with a raised grid pattern on the surface), slightly cooling effect and the way they hydrated my skin post-shower. They’re soaked with nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, along with skin-smoothing hydrolyzed silk peptides and healing allantoin.

The only thing I didn’t love was the floral fragrance, which is likely from the essential oil listed in the ingredients. Though I didn’t feel any skin irritation, I did notice that my under-eye bags looked slightly worse when I wore these during an initial 15-minute testing period. Because I’m sensitive to essential oils and also because Dr. Shirazi noted that skin irritants can exacerbate your under-eye circles (see more below), I tested these for a second and third time but shortened the duration to 10 minutes each. I saw better results (slight depuffing, calming of post-shower redness and noticeable hydration) during these shorter testing periods, so I’d recommend limiting your skin exposure or avoiding altogether if you have especially reactive skin.

Best Under-Eye Patches For Depuffing

A Lightweight Option That’s Rich In Antioxidants

Derma E Vitamin C Bright Eyes Hydro Gel Patches

Material: Hydrogel | Key ingredients: Allantoin, vitamins C and B3, caffeine | Fragrance: None | Price per pair: $0.87

Best for:

  • Those with sensitive skin
  • Those who want a vitamin C product
  • Those on a budget

Skip if:

  • You want a sturdier mask, as these can tear easily
  • You want a more cooling effect

Testing the Derma E patches felt like a lightbulb moment for me and my skin. These were one of the only eye patches that gave my under eyes a significant depuffing effect, thanks to their cooling hydrogel makeup and the inclusion of ingredients like caffeine and moisture-boosting allantoin. Another star ingredient is vitamin C, an antioxidant that’s commonly featured in under-eye creams for its brightening, anti-aging properties. While the patches are saturated with a thin layer of liquid, there is no extraneous goop or unnecessary fragrance, so they didn’t set off any skin alarms during testing.

These masks weren’t quite as nourishing as some of the other contenders, but if you’re following them up with a moisturizer, you should be all set on hydration. Another downside is that they are pretty thin and delicate, so as other reviewers have pointed out they can rip if you’re not careful when scooping them out of the jar or adjusting them on your face. Even so, at less than a dollar per pair they’re also the most affordable options on this list and well worth the money.

Best Under-Eye Patches For Dry Skin

Grippy Foil Masks That Offer Deep Hydration

Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Eye Masks

Materials: Foil, elastic, cellulose fiber | Key ingredients: Aloe, jojoba seed oil, peptides, calendula extract, amino acids, hyaluronic acid | Fragrance: None | Price per pair: $4.33

Best for:

  • Deep hydration
  • Those with sensitive skin
  • Travel-friendly packaging

Skip if:

  • You prefer the feel of hydrogel eye masks
  • You want a cooling effect
  • You’re on a budget

I tested the gold version of Wander Beauty’s ever-popular Baggage Claim Eye Masks (also available in rose gold), which delivered a deep hit of hydration after a steamy shower. Packaged in a light layer of liquid, the foil exterior of these masks is very thin, pliable and lightweight—unlike anything else I tested on this list—but contains a middle layer of an elastic material, so they stay in place. The upper foil layer helps skin retain some of its heat rather than fully cooling it down, but these patches still felt pleasant, with enough liquid left over afterward to smooth into my skin like a serum.

Incorporating calendula extract as a depuffing agent and camu camu extract for brightening, the brand claims that these can be beneficial for giving eyes a more alert look, but I found that they were most helpful with hydration and smoothing thanks to all the humectants in them. They are a favorite of dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick, who described these as “selfie-approved masks that deliver multiple benefits,” from reducing puffiness to brightening to moisturizing. Dr. Garshick noted that these individually packaged masks are also really easy to use on the go, so consider packing them (or any of the other travel-friendly options on this list, like Skyn Iceland’s Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels, or my top pick from Loops) on your next red-eye flight.

Best Under-Eye Patches For Wrinkles

Cooling Gels Packed With Potent Ingredients

111Skin Celestial Black Diamond Eye Mask

Material: Hydrogel | Key ingredients: Retinol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, hydrolyzed collagen, diamond powder, peptides | Fragrance: None | Price per pair: $14.38

Best for:

  • Travel-friendly packaging
  • Powerful ingredients like niacinamide and retinol
  • Those with mature skin

Skip if:

  • You have sensitive skin or avoid retinol
  • You’re on a budget

The first thing I noticed when applying 111Skin’s Celestial Black Diamond Eye Masks was the deep, deep chill they gave my skin, which was relaxing. The pliable material that they’re made of—which resembles sparkly war paint—adhered to my skin well, and felt comfortable to wear.

Though they’re supposed to mimic the skin-tightening effects of Botox, it’s tough to see the effects in just one or two applications. (Dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara says that sustained use is necessary for any long-term results with retinol.) While they didn’t particularly improve the appearance of my under-eye area, I think the ingredient list is chock-full of potent ingredients, from retinol to niacinamide, that might be better suited to someone with less sensitive skin. Like most of the winners on this list, these patches are fragrance-free, but they did have a faint medicinal, slightly musty smell to them, which wasn’t terribly noticeable once they were on my face.

Best Cooling Under-Eye Patches

A Refreshing Mask That Soothes Without Excess Moisture

Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels

Material: Hydrogel | Key ingredients: Icelandic glacial water, ginkgo biloba leaf extract, peptides, cranberry seed oil | Fragrance: None | Price per pair: $3.63 and up

Best for:

  • A dry texture and intense cooling
  • Sensitive skin
  • Travel-friendly packaging

Skip if:

  • You have dry skin
  • You want an under-eye brightener

I’ve been a longtime fan of Skyn Iceland’s Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels, since way before I started working on this story, and after additional testing I stand by my initial assessment. These individually packaged patches have accompanied me on transatlantic flights, soothed my swollen under eyes following crying jags and delivered speedy relief before Zoom meetings. They’re refreshingly cool yet dry—no goop or wetness, just a chill that stays in place without any slippage.

These haven’t done much for brightening or firming, as far as I can tell, but the Skyn Iceland gels are the most invigorating masks I’ve ever tried, and they can at least tackle the depuffing part of skincare prep in the morning. This might have to do with the fact that they’re enhanced with Icelandic glacial water, which helps them maintain maximum chill when you’re masking. I left them on for 10 minutes during testing per the directions, though I’ve let them linger on my face for half an hour in the past and think they can be helpful for deeper depuffing that way. Plus, the textural benefits are also second to none: If you don’t like your under-eye masks to feel wet or soggy, these are for you.

Best Budget Under-Eye Patches

Affordable Masks That Are Soaked In Caffeine And Collagen

Patchology FlashPatch Rejuvenating Eye Gels

Material: Hydrogel | Key ingredients: Caffeine, hydrolyzed collagen, centella asiatica, hyaluronic acid | Fragrance: Yes | Price per pair: $1.67

Best for:

  • Soothing ingredients like tiger grass and aloe
  • Hydration
  • Those on a budget

Skip if:

  • You’re sensitive to fragrance
  • You want a cooling effect

Patchology specializes in all sorts of under-eye masks, from resveratrol rosé eye gels to terrazzo cannabis seed oil patches. The FlashPatch eye patches I tested are the brand’s most popular option and feature soothing tiger grass and sodium hyaluronate (a smaller form of hyaluronic acid that penetrates the skin more easily). I liked their gel-like texture and the fact that they weren’t overly gooey or saturated with liquid. Even so, I noticed that there was some slippage on the face, and I had to hike these up after a minute or two.

Patchology claims that these start to work in as little as five minutes, but I’d hesitate to go that far. They’re pretty hydrating, with enough liquid on them to hydrate like a serum, but they’re no miracle worker. These aren’t very cooling, either (so if you want extra depuffing benefits, I’d suggest popping them in the fridge first). I also felt that the light fragrance slightly irritated my skin after use. Still, if you have less sensitive skin than mine, buying a bulk set of under-eye patches for less than $2 per pair isn’t bad for a little extra hydration and relaxation in the morning.

Best Reusable Under-Eye Patches

A Sustainable Pick To Pair With Your Favorite Serums And Creams

Dieux Tattoo Forever Eye Mask

Material: 100% nonporous silicone | Key ingredients: None (designed to be used with the serum of your choice) | Fragrance: No | Price per pair: $25

Best for:

  • A more sustainable option
  • Customizable under-eye treatment
  • Travel-friendly packaging

Skip if:

  • You want a single-use eye mask that doesn’t require additional prep work
  • You prefer a dewier texture to your mask
  • You don’t want to buy a separate product to use with your mask

These under-eye patches are set apart by the fact that they’re reusable—for up to a year (according to Dieux) before the logo on them starts to fade, but theoretically still usable even after. The beauty of these is that you can layer them over any eye cream or serum of your choice since they’re not presoaked in a formula like the others on this list. I tested mine with the brand’s Auracle Eye Serum and on a separate occasion a Kiehl’s vitamin C eye cream, and I found that using Dieux’s cooling gel with the eye patches yielded a slight reduction in puffiness, while pairing them with the eye cream helped with hydration.

You prep these masks by first cleaning them with water and soap; from there, you apply your favorite serum to clean, dry skin and place the Dieux eye patches on top to form an occlusive seal. Your own mileage may vary when it comes to efficacy, so I’d recommend consulting the buying guide below on which ingredients to look out for in an eye patch (the same wisdom should apply to whichever serum or cream you’re pairing with these). Dabbling with different products is all part of the fun of having a reusable under-eye patch, so mix and match with ingredients that suit your skin best.

Other Under-Eye Patches I Tested

I tested six other products that didn’t make the cut. Here’s why.

CosRx Advanced Snail Hydrogel Eye Patch: On the bright side, these patches provided super long-lasting hydration thanks to the fact that they’re soaked in snail mucin, but they were ultimately too goopy and heavy to stay in place on my face. These ended up sliding down my cheeks within less than a minute of testing, rendering them pretty ineffective and making the process of wearing them rather uncomfortable.

Peace Out Retinol Eye Lift Patches: I was intrigued by the unusual pincer-like shape of this eye patch, but ultimately, my narrower eye shape wasn’t served by the wide C-shaped design of this mask. The lower half of the mask didn’t cover my under-eye area very well, and the faint fragrance in it caused slight skin irritation.

Topicals Faded Under Eye Masks: I love the design and feel of these masks, but I didn’t really see any benefits beyond a slight cooling effect. They’re lacking in liquid for hydration, and as other reviewers have noted, the adhesive on these is pretty strong—like tape—and will catch on your skin if you’re not careful.

Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask: I didn’t notice any major benefits of using this mask besides my skin feeling dewier after the fact. I also found them uncomfortable to wear (overly liquidy, overly fragrant) for the steep price, and 10 minutes in I wanted to rip these off my face.

Peter Thomas Roth 24K Gold Pure Luxury Lift And Firm Hydra-Gel Eye Patches: I was on the fence about these under-eye patches on my first go-round since they caused some slight skin irritation and didn’t produce any noticeable benefits. On my second testing, they lost their grip almost immediately and started sliding down my face.

Dr Dennis Gross Skincare DermInfusions Lift And Repair Eye Mask: Compared to other eye patches, these fit more like a sheet mask over the eye area. They were a bit too saturated with liquid, though, to feel comfortable on the face, and they have the distinct odor of cat urine or something equally odious—as other reviewers like to mention.

How I Tested The Best Under-Eye Patches

When curating a list of potential products for testing, I scanned for bestsellers across retailers, cross-referenced my own personal favorites from prior testing with ones that were highly recommended by beauty publications and included a few newer arrivals that haven’t been widely covered yet.

Each under-eye patch was vetted for efficacy (i.e., how well it works at brightening, firming and reducing puffiness), its feel and texture on the skin, its moisturizing properties, any skin irritation concerns and its overall value. I tested masks for 15 minutes at a time for the above criteria, unless the directions specifically suggested a shorter or longer duration. I also took clear, well-lit photos of my under-eye area before and after testing each eye patch to determine any changes in texture, brightness or puffiness. Some eye patches were tested multiple times: I tested the Dieux eye patch, for example, with two different serums to determine efficacy, and I tried certain patches more than once if I was on the fence about results the first time.

How To Pick The Best Under-Eye Patches

There are tons of under-eye patches on the market claiming to boost the appearance of your dark under-eye circles and ease a range of skin concerns, but actual efficacy varies. To help parse out which ones are worth buying, and what to expect from a good under-eye mask, I consulted three dermatologists who weighed in on how to shop for your skin type and which common irritants to steer clear of when you’re scanning the ingredient lists of each of these.

Benefits

Experts say that eye-patches work by forming an occlusive barrier that helps the ingredients in their thin membrane-like materials penetrate the skin even better than just layering on a standard eye cream or moisturizer might. Gohara says, “These patches obviously have different actives in them, and when you put the actives on and they’re infused under an occlusive surface like a patch, that can bring benefits by making the actives be a little bit more efficacious.”

There are some clear benefits to these patches, Gohara says, including reducing puffiness under the eyes after a long night out. Still, she suggests managing your expectations on how well they will accomplish their intended goals. “Obviously if there was a panacea to under-eye discoloration or puffiness, many of us would be using it,” she emphasizes. “It’s not completely hocus pocus, but I don’t want people to think that they’re putting on some end-all, be-all, because frankly, that doesn’t exist.”

Active Ingredients

Your experience will differ largely based on the active ingredients that make up these under-eye patches. There are dozens of different types out there, so it’s always helpful to scan the ingredients list first to see which ones will help you accomplish your skincare goals. Our experts recommend reaching for masks that contain brightening ingredients like vitamin C and niacinamide; humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin for hydration; and retinol if you want a smoothing effect that reduces fine lines or an uneven skin texture.

Shirazi says that the ones formulated with caffeine and licorice root are especially helpful for drawing out excess fluid that makes eye bags more pronounced. She also recommends applying them cold if you want more depuffing benefits: “I like to keep them in the fridge and pop them on a little bit chilled.”

Skin Sensitivity

Another important consideration when choosing between under-eye patches is your skin sensitivity level. For those with more reactive skin, Shirazi recommends avoiding masks that contain fragrance or essential oil extracts, since these have the potential to cause skin irritation and, in some cases, exacerbate eye puffiness and dark circles.

Materials

One sneaky irritant you might not think to check, Gohara says, are the adhesives (like latex) baked into some of these masks, which are a “primary irritant” that can make your skin’s appearance even worse after use. Another potential irritant she points out is the actual material the patch is made from, whether that be gel, cellulose, plastic or something else. “People with really sensitive skin, like eczema, or those who are prone to contact allergies should really steer clear of this, of any patch, it doesn’t matter.”

My Expertise

I’m a beauty and wellness reporter with nearly a decade of experience testing and reviewing products, especially in the skincare realm. I’ve edited for publications like Self and Allure in the past, and my product reviews, beauty reporting and shopping roundups have appeared in Marie Claire, Self, the Strategist, GQ, Elle and beyond.

To round out my testing, I also consulted three dermatologists: Dr. Mona Gohara, an associate clinical professor at Yale who specializes in skin of color; Dr. Marisa Garshick, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York; and Dr. Azadeh Shirazi, founder of AziMD Skincare. Lastly, this in-depth evaluation was edited by deputy editor Jane Sung, who has overseen all tested beauty and grooming content for Forbes Vetted, ranging from the best mineral sunscreens to the top electric razors for men.

Do Under-Eye Patches Actually Work?

Depending on what results you’re looking to see and the ingredients in any given mask you’re using, you might notice a difference right away or not until you’ve used these masks consistently. Gohara says that the one ingredient that can make an immediate difference is hyaluronic acid. “It’s this very potent humectant that works like a micro sponge. When you put it on, it just immediately absorbs water and immediately plumps,” she explains.

Retinol, on the other hand, is an example of an ingredient where it will take time to see the fruits of your labor. “When we prescribe a retinoid cream in the office, for example, we are telling the patients that they’re not really going to see any results before four to six weeks,” Gohara says. In other words, any product being used for long-term firming or skin texture benefits is going to require consistency and extended use.

Is It Better To Wear Under-Eye Patches At Night Or In The Morning?

Though there’s no golden rule about what time of day to wear under-eye patches, you’re probably going to see the best results if you’re masking when you need it the most: at your groggiest, when your skin is dehydrated from sleep and when your under-eye area is at its puffiest. “I usually think of them as more of a quick pick-me-up for when you wake up in the morning and feel like you need a little bit of a boost after a late night,” says Garshick. Shirazi adds that they’re especially beneficial to use on flights, the morning after a sodium-heavy day or before an event where you’re going to be wearing makeup and want to hydrate and prep the skin.

One exception to this rule is for products containing retinol, an ingredient that works best after dark, since it typically breaks down when exposed to sunlight—rendering it less effective in the process. Garshick notes that product formulas vary, and some will be designed to be more photostable than others, but she still recommends that anything containing retinol be used at night only.

How Long Can I Leave Under-Eye Patches On?

The short answer is that it depends on the ingredients in each mask and how sensitive your skin is. “So many of them have hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides, which are great at hydrating the skin and tend to be more gentle,” Shirazi says. “And when they’re formulated with those ingredients, they can actually work better if you keep them on longer, even 30 minutes to an hour.” She explains that even though typical instructions say to use these for five to 15 minutes, keeping them on for longer can give the patches more time to work and be effective.

There are exceptions to this advice, like if you’re using a retinol product or any other under-eye patch that contains a known irritant like the ones outlined above. “If they’re powerful ingredients, too much of them can cause irritation,” Shirazi says.

Garshick also suggests taking extra care if you’ve never used the product before and aren’t sure how your skin will react. Just to be safe, she recommends following the instructions on each package, since those will usually reflect a specific amount of time that a product has been tested to be safe and effective.

How Do You Prevent Dark Under-Eye Circles And Puffiness?

Since these under-eye masks are typically only being used every so often to deliver quick relief, it’s worth making choices in between that can help you avoid developing dark circles and puffiness in the first place. Barring any dark circles that are hereditary and not a reflection of your sleep habits, Shirazi says that sleeping well and reducing stress is a major component of reducing dark under-eye circles that look swollen or puffy. “Also make sure you’re not having too much salt because that could certainly draw more water to the under-eye area, making eye bags and dark circles worse,” she says.
